Let's talk oud, for the initiated and for the ones on the path.
Most of the talks (and a lot of writings) have always been about the distillation setup and technique. Many distillers and vendors whisper it in your ears: "oh...I can't tell you my secret technique...it's in my distillation setup....and I can't show you that"
You probably heard it all. the type of condensers....the heat "acrobatics"...Copper pots...steel pots....glass pots....
All of this can be important....and yes, indeed it does have an effect on what the end oil would smell like... a distiller's setup and variables make his "Signature" and that's true.
but do you want to know The Secret?
it's not "the law of attraction" either....
it's simply, the quality of raw materials.
Get quality raw materials, distill them with the latest most sophisticated setup, distill them in a primitive setup, distill them in steel...copper...glass....distill them as a cave man....and every single one of those oils will be a top notch oil with a different character.
Every oud lover does have a preference, and that's understandable, but for the veteran, he'll love all of those. Each will have facets of their own, but all of them will be very high quality ouds. Some might like a cleaner top notes, some more resin, some more incense smoke, but all of those oils are going to be amazing.
When I wanted to start writing up about Lanka Kemuri, All of this went into my mind. This project took a long time to get to this point of actually releasing the oil. The previous part was Ouducational for a reason. I got reminded by all of this because I remembered the bags and bags of shavings that were collected through months and months of cleaning top-grade walla pattas. The Patience it took. The time. and the haggling. And the nightmare of logistics.
Our goal was not to collect general cleaning shavings. Our goal was to collect top grade shavings from the highest grades for this project. You don't hear much about such projects now, do you? Yes yes we understand. One can distill and source actual chips and oud pieces....and hey...we DID that... but there's something that you might not know:
sourcing high quality and top grade shavings IS MUCH HARDER than sourcing oud chips. The process is meticulous and time consuming. Separating the last shavings of Top Grade Oud on the side for a project this big. Imagine how many kgs of oud that had to be cleaned, classified and separated into this lot that we ended up distilling.
You're getting the outcome of the blood, sweat and tears of a network of over 50 persons. from the initial sourcing, to the general cleaning, to the classification again of oud pieces, to the last stage of cleaning of the top grade oud pieces, to accumulating them gram by gram for this project in the course of over a year.
and it doesn't end there! there's the nightmare logistics of sending the dust to the hands of a true O.G. to distill.
This oil ended up being distilled in what you might call a "traditional" setup... with some tweaks (wink wink).
The oil opens with a bit of walla woody fermentation, and no, not the animalic type, the sort of foresty wet bark type. then it starts flourishing into that amazing piercing green walla patta profile. All the resin and heavy notes perserved for a full spectrum oil that screams quality.
If you love Srilankan walla patta oils, don't just look at the price of this and get skeptical. trust me, I know because I would have thought the same.
